The Family Name
Not an ancient double glazing seller, but from the word "Windan" meaning to wind ( a weaver), and "hus" a place of work. The first recorded spelling of the family name may be that of William de Wyndhows, this was dated 1379, in the Poll Tax register of Yorkshire.
Other early examples of recordings include Thomas Wyndhouse in the register of the Freemen of the City of York in1431, and William Wyndowes was a weaver in the same register. There are a number of variations on the spelling including Window, Windowes, Winders, Windrus, Windross, Windress and Windus.
